Pragati - Educate Girls

PRAGATI

There are millions of adolescent girls and young women who have left education and never returned. Early marriage, motherhood, poverty and the lack of nearby secondary schools hold them back.

Pragati is our second chance program that supports them to complete Grade 10 and take the next step towards further education and empowerment.

This is Bunty, 27 - mother of two from a remote rural village in India. She studied until Grade 8 before dropping out of school.

With no access to a secondary school and believing she was no longer eligible, Bunty let go of her dream of becoming a police officer.

Her story is not unique.

Many young women, like Bunty, often leave education due to household duties, early marriage and the lack of access to schools. Very few get a second chance at education.

Preraks, like Sarika, are community mentors in the Pragati program.

They support young women like Bunty to return to education and complete Grade 10 through village-based learning camps.

Sarika, as a Prerak, first organised a Pragati Sabha to involve families, school staff and local influencers in supporting girls' education.

After the Sabha, Sarika met Bunty during a door-to-door visit.

Bunty wanted to study again but feared her family’s disapproval, so Sarika kept engaging with them to build their support.

Bunty joined the learning camp,

where Sarika helped her and other young women build self-study and peer learning skills for their Grade 10 exams.

Bunty’s confidence grew as the camp gave her financial and digital literacy along with other life skills.

Bunty completed Grade 10 with a strong sense of achievement and bigger dreams for her future.

Bunty is one of 31,500 young women who enrolled through Educate Girls and graduated with the support of Preraks like Sarika, local communities and the government.
